Hydraulic Dredging Engineering Analyses
USEPA River Superfund Site

Lally Consulting LLC (Lally LLC) was tasked by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a hydraulic dredging evaluation in support of remedial planning for several shallow water reaches of a large riverine Superfund site. The work included field reconnaissance, analyses of river discharge, bathymetry, and geotechnical data, and application of hydraulic pump and slurry transport expertise.

Through a GIS remote sensing investigation and field reconnaissance, we identified and evaluated potential discharge pipeline routes to a proposed sediment processing facility up to approximately 7 miles long and with up to 50 ft. elevation head. Using Lally LLC’s proprietary hydraulic dredge production models, the number, size and locations of booster pumps, total dynamic head, pipeline pressures, velocities, discharge and solids production were estimated accounting for various sediment and water properties, equipment characteristics, elevation changes and alignments/bends.

As part of the engineering evaluation, Lally LLC proposed several appropriate floating, amphibious and terrestrial dredging, materials handling and process technologies, and made recommendations for pre-design site data acquisition, characterization and analyses to support project remedial planning and design.
