Dredge Project Planning, Berth Design and Pier Extension
The 9,800 DWT (115 m LOA) Northern Victor is the second largest processing vessel in the United States fishing industry. Originally built in 1945 for the U.S. war effort, she was eventually converted to become a nomadic vessel, spending a portion of the year processing pollock in the Aleutian Islands, and otherwise, traveling to and from Seattle for maintenance.
Lally LLC was contracted by the ship’s owner to assist with developing alternatives to permanently berth the Northern Victor in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. We began work by acquiring and analyzing design vessel and operations parameters, and site bathymetric survey, tides, geotechnical, geomorphological, and MetOcean data as part of a physical processes study.
Originally requested to evaluate berth dredging alternatives, Lally LLC developed a conceptual dredging plan that would minimize dredge volumes and meet the requirements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dredged Material Management Program (DMMP). The plan factored existing bathymetry, sediment characteristics, side slopes, required berth area and minimum required depths accounting including underkeel clearance, dredging along structure faces, other physical and logistical constraints, and regionally available dredging equipment and contractors. Based on this work it was resolved that a pier expansion would better serve the Owner, by eliminating the requirement for berth dredging and future maintenance, and to provide improved terminal layout and mooring performance in the range of conditions forecasted. Lally LLC developed a concept pier design to be advanced by the Owner’s marine structural engineer. The pier expansion has since been constructed and the Northern Victor now has a homeport from which operations can be more efficiently and safely conducted.
