Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Site
Contaminated Sediment Transload Terminal Design
Lally Consulting LLC was selected by an industrial property Owner through a competitive proposal process to assist them in evaluating the technical feasibility and cost-efficacy of constructing and operating a new contaminated sediment transload terminal at their facility located along the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Site.
Based on site constraints, opportunities and process requirements for the unloading of a range of barge types, productions rates, sediment management and intermodal transport steps, Lally LLC developed concept engineering designs for three scenarios of interest; two to facilitate Early Action Area (EAA) projects (CERCLA and RCRA), totaling 16,000 cy and 176,000 cy, and a long-term option to service dredging projects in the Puget Sound region over a 5‐10 year timeframe, totaling over 700,000 cy.
For each of the scenarios, our team determined optimal equipment and technical approaches for barge offloading, sediment processing, water management / treatment, sediment load-out, and transportation and disposal, developed technical drawings illustrating the operational elements and dimensions of the transload facility components, performed quantity takeoffs, and assembled detailed production and cost models. Results were compiled in a report and drawings package for the Owner along with recommendations.
