When it matters most, during construction, Lally LLC commits to optimizing project performance. We are passionate about marine technology and tuning it for project success. We see opportunities in most all dredging and marine construction projects, find efficiencies and assist in attaining improvements in critical performance areas like Production, Accuracy, Water Management, Spillage Control, Environmental Protection, and Safety.
To carry out dredge and marine construction performance optimization work, Lally LLC employs a range of real-time measurement, advanced telemetry and remote monitoring systems. Examples include;
- Real-time Data Telemetry Systems for Positioning and Production Monitoring
- Dredging and Capping Progress Monitoring (DREDGEPACK, Trimble, Teledyne)
- Near-Real-Time Progress and Post-Dredge and Placement Survey Processing and Mapping for Rapid Acceptance Determinations and Return Directions
- Machine Control for Backhoe Dredges
- Sediment Monitoring from Dredge / Cab
- Post-Dredge Sampling for Spillage / Residuals Measurement using advanced coring and surface grab techniques
- Slurry Transport Measurements (i.e. Density, Flow Rates, Line Velocities)
- Sediment Processing Monitoring (i.e. % solids, course fraction cut points, automated flocculent dosing)
- Cap Material Carbon Amendment Monitoring
- Bathymetry and Laser Scanning Integration with Dredge Positioning
- Hopper and Ullage Measurements
- Hopper Overflow / Green Valve Monitoring
- Water Quality (NTU, TSS, DO, Plume) Monitoring via Autonomous Buoys
- Quality of Life (i.e. Sound, Light) Monitoring
Whether performing these monitoring activities on site or from a remote location, we are often able to set up alarms that trigger at pre-set metrics (e.g. permit-stipulated NTUs, offshore dredged material placement boundaries), in order to rapidly inform necessary operational changes.
Lally LLC has monitored critical dredging performance on our projects across 16 time zones (i.e. East Coast Standard Time – New Zealand Standard Time) and effectively been able to motivate improvements saving the client tens of millions of dollars using these remote monitoring technologies.
As sole-source independent consultant, or member of interdisciplinary team, Lally is often called to serve on projects requiring specialized coastal engineering, environmental, dredging engineering expertise. In these capacities Lally LLC has been contracted by governments (e.g. U.S. Department of Defense), industry clients, dredging and marine contractors, engineering firms, environmental consultants, and NGOs to help review project performance and offer ways to make improvements.

With over 30 years’ experience on capital works, channel maintenance, sediment remediation and beach restoration projects, Lally has first-hand knowledge of the risks marine infrastructure projects pose on the environment. Entrainment, habitat degradation, noise, water quality impacts, and contaminant release are some of the key stressors that need to be managed for the protection of marine mammals and organisms, and quality-of-life in coastal communities.
With practical knowledge of marine equipment and operations, engineering controls and permit conditions, Lally LLC engineers and biologists are skilled in implementing environmental monitoring programs that are pragmatic, adaptive and effective.
Lally LLC personnel have experience working on trailing suction hopper dredges (TSHDs), hydraulic pipeline dredges, and mechanical dredges along the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific seaboards, including the safeguarding of several species through dredge technology and operational initiatives. We also have experience working with specialist biologist observers.
Lally LLC can help write, setup and implement environmental monitoring plans for the following stressors;
- Trailing Suction Hopper Dredges
- Hydraulic Cutterhead Pipeline Dredges
- Hydraulic Dustpan Pipeline Dredges
